During

I'm afraid it doesn't happen in 24hrs like the TV programmes. Electricians need to be booked to put in lighting and good contrators are usually busy. Allow 2 months -at least- for a medium sized garden and expect chaos for a while! Autumn and winter are a good time to do your planning and get quotes from contractors. It's also a good time to move any large shrubs and plant trees that will form the backbone to your design.

Remember that if you want spring bulbs that you need to order them in September or October the previous year and that with your planting guide you can order plants when you need them, spreading the costs throughout the year.

Don't forget about irrigation and places to plug in stuff. Lighting can also add a dramatic effect to the garden and needs to be planned in at the early stages.

Before

Picture
This garden is typical of many. Not a disaster but mostly just a place to kick around a football. Great when the kids were at home but no longer meeting the needs of the new owners.

After

Picture
With your 'Design Portfolio' clasped firmly in your muddy hands, the end result should be worth the wait. The right plants, in the right place and a design to meet your needs that adds value to your property.
